Hello, everyone! We at Team Visionary hope that you’ve had a great week. Today, we have a spectacular list of the 7 Best Minecraft Boss Mods of 2021 for you guys.
Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world today, and it’s no wonder. With its flexible and replayable gameplay, it’s a treasure trove for all sorts of gamers. Whether you like braving the dangerous dark deep in the mine in search for the shiniest ores, or if you spend most of your days relaxing in fields of wheat, you can enjoy Minecraft at your own pace and in your own way.
Inevitably, however, each and every player hits the point where vanilla Minecraft becomes predictable and, perhaps, even boring. Even with the content – packed updates that Mojang pushes out every so often, after all, there is only so much you can do in Minecraft, especially if you’ve been playing the game for years. Minecraft’s saving grace in this aspect, however, is its amazing moddability — it has perhaps one of the biggest modding libraries and communities of any video game, with thousands of mods and modpacks available with a single click on dozens of different launchers.
As with any video game community, the modders out there are vastly creative, with fun and passionate ideas that surpass our wildest imaginings. The mods on the market do everything, quite literally, from adding dungeons and dragons, to overhauling weaponry crafting into a literal forging system, to introducing nuclear reactors to Minecraft, to adding thousands of new decorative items.
Today, we’ve compiled our list of favorite Minecraft mods that add bosses to the game. Let’s be real, after all, the Ender Dragon is only scary the first half a dozen times you kill it, and the Wither isn’t all that useful. These mods add one or more truly terrifying bosses, from gods of the realms themselves, to hulking demonic beasts. These bosses are not only awesome in concept, but also often come with challenging mechanics that will push you to choose you as a player. You’re sure to find something to add to your personal modpack in this massive, extensive list of Minecraft boss mods!
Installing Minecraft Mods
If you already know how to install Minecraft mods, feel free to skip right on ahead. However, for those who are new to mods, here’s the quick and dirty on how to get these additions into your game.
There are quite a few methods to load mods, but in the interest of this article, we’ll be talking about Forge Modloader, one of the oldest, biggest and most well-known mod loaders out there. To install Forge, you can either visit their official site, select a version you’d like to download, and follow the instructions from then on, taking care to choose to install the client and NOT the server.
Botania by Vazkii
If you have never played Botania before, then you might not think that this is a good mod which adds in a boss — after all, it’s advertised as a botanical, magic mod about gardening and pretty flowers. You would, however, be wrong if you thought that! This mod adds in an absolute ton of things which are amazingly fun to play. Of course, this mod is on this list because it includes a super challenging and incredibly cool – looking final boss which comes with multiple tiers for any brave challenger to fight.
The mod itself is one based on three concepts, magic, technology, and nature. In other words, this tech mod is themed around nature based magic, or natural magic. The mod is centered on using and creating magical flowers and devices which use them by adding in a new kind of magic currency called mana, which the mod describes as the power of the earth. You’ll be able to find plenty of automation to be had with this mod, because that was one of the goals that the mod creators wanted — automation without the need of pipes, wires, GUIs, numbers, and to use renewable resources all with pleasing visual designs. As someone who’s played their fair share of modded Minecraft worlds that ended up in a messy tangle of aquaducts and conduits, this is always a super welcome change.
Now back to what this article is talking about, this mod also adds in a boss called The Guardian of Gaia. This boss mob needs to be summoned by right-clicking a terrasteel ingot on an active beacon that has four Gaia pylons nearby. If you would like to fight the harder version of this boss, then you’ll need to use a Gaia Spirit ingot instead.
The boss has a total of three phases, the first one will have the boss teleporting to a random place inside the arena every three seconds or whenever it takes damage from the player. Each time the boss teleports, it will spawn a Pixie that will attack you and anyone else in the arena. Anyone that is standing in between the Gaia and the spot it will teleport will take damage each time the teleport goes off, so be careful where you are standing! But that’s not the only reason to be careful, the boss will also have traps which will damage you and cause various effects.
The second phase will trigger when the boss gets lowered down to around twenty percent health. At this point the boss will float into the air above the arena terrifyingly. That’s not all however, the Guardian of Gaia will then become invulnerable and will spawn monsters all around the arena. Waves will spawn every four seconds and each wave will have four monsters per player fighting the boss. Zombies have the greatest chances of spawning followed by Skeletons, Wither Skeletons, and finally Witches. After ten waves of monsters, if you and any other challengers have survived the onslaught, the waves will stop and the boss will descend and become vulnerable again. There are other options to look at such as the Minecraft Minigames resources.
The final phase will begin after the boss becomes vulnerable again. This phase will have the boss do the same as the first one, but it will be teleporting around much faster than before. This phase will end when the boss dies, and when it does die whoever got the last hit will have the loot dropped around it.
Hard mode of the boss will follow the same phases but everything about the boss becomes harder. The boss gains more armor, teleports much faster, does more damage, witches spawn more often and skeletons will wield elementium swords.
The boss will drop a lot of amazing things that will be beneficial for playing the mod and also things that are just great without it. One of my favorite items it adds in is the Dice of Fate which can give players the Key of the King’s Law. This item uses mana to create a ton of sword projectiles which will fly to where you are aiming and explode — insanely strong and tons and tons of fun to use! It’s definitely worth it to fight the boss, if only to obtain its incredible loot.

Lycanites Mobs by Lycanite
Lycanites Mobs is a massive mod that adds in over one hundred new mobs to specific biomes, dimensions, and more. These mobs range from aggressive and highly dangerous mobs like the Volcan, to peaceful types like Makas. Experience mobs in a whole new way by playing with this mod.
Let’s be honest, mobs in vanilla Minecraft can be scary if you’re new to the game, but once you’ve got a good grasp of the Minecraft gameplay loop, they kind of become pushovers. You might be overrun by hordes of zombies or blown up by a creeper, but once you get yourself a nice set of armor and an enchanted weapon or two, they are not all that scary anymore. But with this mod, all of that is turned on its head. Each mob itself is scary in one way or another, that being either they are tanky, they hit hard, they have unique mechanics that can turn a fight around, or they just look absolutely terrifying.
Take the Argus for an example; this creature is a disruptive Chaos Elemental that manifests when the balance of nature is disturbed. Argi will apply a debuff called Instability, causing the victim to go flying everywhere. This is only one of the many highly dangerous mobs you can find either on land, underground, at sea, or in the air. Plus, these monsters aren’t always visible on the surface; every action you take in this terrifying new Minecraft world could potentially contribute to spawning in a creature from this mod. For instance, if you make too big of a fire you could spawn a Cinder, or if you mine trees you could spawn a Treant.
Just like how this mod adds in plenty of hostile creatures, it’s the same for creatures who you can tame to help you. The mod adds a comprehensive bestiary and taming system that allows you to tame even the most ferocious of beasts. For instance, the Maug is a wolf-like arctic bear with a crippling pounce that will leave enemies limping away. You can tame this by feeding it beast treats and riding it with a saddle. This is just one of the many support mobs you can find, but some other mobs can also be summoned!
If all that wasn’t enough, this mod not only adds in mobs, but it also adds in items and armors from the mobs as well. By using the tiers of forges, infuser, and equipment station, you can craft and upgrade different tools and armors. Summoning Staves are also another major item for the mod, with these you can summon mobs to defend and attack. Pick between the twenty+ summonable mobs. But it doesn’t stop here, some of these mobs can’t even be fused together when the correct two are summoned. Take a look at some of the Team Visionary developers best modpacks list here.
Some of the most popular modpacks that use this amazingly unique and challenging mod is RLCraft and Nephrite — though, do be careful with RLCraft; it’ss a very hardcore sort of pack!
While a lot of mobs in Lycanites can be considered hard and boss-like, there are three total mobs which are labeled with the boss tag. The first one we will be talking about is the Amalgalich. The Amalgalich is a powerful lich that has engulfed many powerful souls which has transformed it into the massive monster that it is. Its identity has long since left it and it was all replaced with madness, madness that drives it to ravage everything around.
This massive boss has a total of four thousand health and will be the fight of a century. But be careful when fighting it because it will bombard you with giant spectral bolts, these bolts will cause fear and blindness in those who are hit. Phase one will have the boss summon Reapers that not only heal the Amalgalich but they also use powerful attacks that, if hit, will cause instant death. Phase two starts when the boss stops trying to each and will summon Geists and giant Epions. Geists are mobs that will eventually explode and leave massive areas filled with Shadowfire. Phase three will begin when the Amalgalich gets hungry again and this time will attack players with balls of Darklings. Stuff from each phase does not disappear and will stay on the field, so be careful not to let everything pile up and to not let the boss eat them to heal.
The second boss mob added into the game by Lycanites is something called Asmodeus. Asmodeus is a hyper intelligent demon which is credited to have caused any form of the demonic invasion. This massive boss also has four thousand health. Combat wise, this great demon has a wide range of attacks and can jump great heights with it’s demonic mech. Not to mention it has a massive gatling Gun which will occasionally fire at targets. Asmodeus has three phases which you will see when fighting it. The first one will have Asmodeus release rings of projectiles outwards, the second one will summon large Astaroths that will project a shield around Asmodeus and will not go away till they are destroyed. The last phase, Astaroths will now heal Asmodeus and monsters known as Cacodemons are spawned.
The last boss of this mod is Rahovart, the lord of the Underworld. This monster’s name itself is enough to strike fear into the hearts of even the strongest monsters. This boss shares the same amount of health as the other two, that being four thousand. This demon will attack players with a powerful Hellfire Cannon. You can expect to see three total phases when fighting Rahovart. The first one will have you fighting Belphs that Rahovart summons, overtime they become stronger until finally they explode, giving Rahovart a Hellfire orb. When he receives five of these orbs, he will release a wave of hellfire that deals massive damage and burns away effects. The second phase will look much like the first one, but instead of the Belphs growing stronger, the Behemoths that are also summoned will do it now. The final phase will have the boss creating his own orbs of Hellfire and he will create hellfire barriers. Killing his minions will destroy the barriers.
Mowzie’s Mobs by Bob Mowzie
The goal of Mowzies mobs is to add in a variety of fictional creatures into Minecraft. They also state that they pride themselves on the unique AI, environmental and atmospheric appropriateness, and standard-setting animations. This mod adds in several mobs which are considered to be bosses, and we will be talking about two of them.
The Frostmaw are a dangerous beast which you can seldomly find in snow biomes. Massive and quick, these are already terrifying on their own, but what makes them so dangerous is their powerful ice breath which makes them near impossible opponents to defeat. These monsters guard a precious ice crystal which can unleash pure winter energy whenever you use it. This boss has multiple attacks starting with swiping at targets dealing damage to everything in front of it. Roaring which knocks await nearby mobs and players. Its most deadly attack is when it slams down in front of it, dealing damage to anything it hits. Not to mention its ice breath. This will be a challenging boss for you to fight.
Another mob you can find is the Naga. Coastal cliffs are now a danger to traverse because of this beast of a monster! Tales of this winged serpent have been told through legends and through the chattering lips of adventurers who come across it, that is, if they happened to survive the encounter. Though, people have found ways of fighting this beast, and one of those ways is to land an arrow in the right spot to knock them from the sky or to shoot them when they are preparing for an attack. And if you happen to kill this monster, you will be rewarded with the sharp fangs they drop upon death, which can in turn be used to brew poisons, antidotes, and preventatives.

The Twilight Forest by Benimatic
The Twilight Forest is one of the best mods I’ve seen, in terms of boss integration! For those who are unfamiliar with this overwhelmingly popular mod, it adds in a whole new dimension that the player can travel through. In this dimension, you can find tons of different kinds of mobs and different biomes. Each biome in turn contains its own boss that you need to kill to progress to the next biome and next boss. The bosses get harder and harder as you move on and the mobs act the same way. You’re not alone, however! Luckily, Twilight Forest lets players harvest the different mobs and bosses to make tools to help you along in your journeys.
You will first need to kill the Naga. This beast can be found in a stone field – like structure in which you will need to attack its weak points (no spoilers now, I’m sure you can figure it out yourself!) to kill it. When it is killed, you will be rewarded with Naga Scales; and once you touch this scale, only then will you be able to go fight the next boss.
The second boss is the Twilight Lich, which can be found in the Lich Tower. Killing it will drop a scepter that will not only allow you to go to the next boss area, but can also be used to spawn in mob minions to fight for you — win win!
The Minoshroom will be the next in line to meet its demise at your hand! This boss can be found in the Labyrinth structure inside the swamp biomes. This bull will drop you some amazingly delicious Meef Stroganoff. You will need to touch it in order to move on.
This kind of progress keeps going for a whole eight more bosses and three more biomes. This goes until you reach the Final Castle which isn’t currently finished in the mod, but this will be the last location where you fight the Queen. We’re keep

Mutant Creatures by shcott21
This mod adds in “mini-bosses” into your game in the form of mutant mobs! These mutants are essentially buffed versions of the original mobs, each with their own unique attacks, animations and mechanics.
The Mutant Enderman, for instance, will spawn with one hundred hearts and has seven attacks for you to fight against. One of these attacks is called Forced Look which only happens when you look at the mob. When you look away from the mob it will pull you into itself and blind you at the same time — that’s terrifying! If you thought that was cool, do note that this is just one of the five mini bosses added in, the other ones are the Mutant Skeletons with its piercing crossbow, the Mutant Zombie with its massive ground slam, the Mutant Creeper which has a massive explosion radius, the Mutant Snow Golem, and the Spider Pig with its pig head and spider body.
Each mob either drops something unique or can be used as a pet; the Spider Pig and the snow golem are two such creatures that you can gain the loyalty of. The Mutant Enderman, on the other hand, drops a unique item called the Endersoul Hand which can pick up blocks and throw them far distances. Plus, it’ll also allow you to teleport within one hundred and twenty blocks — that’s super neat!

Thaumcraft
No boss monster mod list would be complete without the addition of Thaumcraft, one of the oldest, biggest and most extensive (and intensive) magic mods in the history of Minecraft. Thaumcraft is a wonderfully intricate magic mod that focuses on researching the world around you to learn magic.
The world of Thaumcraft starts off fairly simply: you’ll be spawned into a regular Minecraft world with some strange additions, most obviously elemental crystals that’ll form around the world. Once you collect some of these crystals, that’s when the magic begins — you’ll be visited by strange dreams and visions that will instruct you where to go next: crushing the crystals in a bowl and applying them to various blocks to create your first Thaumcraft workspace. As you play, you’ll be prompted to create a device that can scan every single item in the world around you, even modded items (!) and learn of the natural, manmade and forbidden magics that exist in the world, before learning to harness them for your own usage.
There are several main categories of magic that you can choose to specialize in: Alchemy, Artificing, Golemancy, Infusion, Thaumaturgy, and Eldritch. Each of these contain entire skill trees of progression, and you’ll be slowly guided through the basics of each through your trusty Thaumonomicon. Here’s a quick rundown of all of them:
Alchemy is the manipulation of the elements around you in the world. There are dozens of aspects that you can get from melting down items — ignis, or fire, from coal; terra, or earth, from grass, and the like.
Artificing is the crafting of magic objects, with over 50 new magical items you can create and utilize, ranging from jars that store exp and elemental energy, to lamps that make plants grow faster and magical armor and tools. This also includes a casting glove that will
Infusion is the act of enchanting, or infusing, certain effects into certain items — both to imbue them with enchantments and to transmute them into different things completely!
Golemancy is a lovely twist from the usual popular tech mods, and a fantastic replacement for them if having tubes and powerducts running all over your base isn’t your thing — instead of building high-tech machinery to do things for you, you can create and customize special golems to perform repetitive or difficult tasks, such as mining, digging, transferring items, fighting and more!
Of course, Thaumcraft is far too big of a mod for me to explain in such a short space. If you’re interested in learning more, we recommend going to their wiki… or better yet, giving the mod a try! Fend off the corruption, master both the magics of nature and the darkness, build up your alchemical lab and become the best mage there is in Minecraft!
Ice and Fire: Dragons
Now, magical flowers are fantastic and all, but are you looking for a mod that adds creatures to fear? Behold — Ice and Fire: Dragons is the perfect mod, not just because of its nuanced details and great models, but also because who doesn’t want to fight, tame and ride some dragons?
Ice and Fire: Dragons adds two kinds of dragons to the game: Ice and, well, Fire! The type of dragon largely influences the color of the dragon, and their main form of attack. It also adds a ton of mythical, fantasy creatures such as hippogryphs, death worms, cockatrices, sirens and cyclops… all of which have their own mechanics, but mainly, the dragons take the cake in this mod.
These dragons spawn with treasure hordes and an assigned gender, and a level between 1-5. All dragons drop loot when killed, but only level 5 female dragons drop dragon eggs — the only way you can tame a dragon of your own. Once the conditions are met for the egg to hatch, you’ll have your very own, ravenous, baby dragon! And if you manage to keep it alive and healthy till it grows up, you too will be able to soar the skies in a blaze of inferno or glacial fury.
In all, this is a fantastically detailed and coherent mod that any thrillseeker looking to add a mythical element to their gameplay. It fits great in almost any modpack, or as a standalone, with its set of own armor, weapons and items.
Do note that Ice and Fire: Dragons is a large mod that we can’t fully cover in this short blurb, so if you’re interested, do check out their modpage below!

Conclusion
Part of why Minecraft is so incredibly appealing is its nostalgic quality, the familiarity that you can load into your new world and know exactly how everything works, know exactly what you want to do.
However, sometimes, what makes Minecraft so appealing is that it is what the player makes it, that it’s so receptive to player creativity. And nothing demonstrates player creativity like player-made mods!
